A tapoff is a leatherworker's best friend — a precision tool used to transfer a tooling pattern directly onto vegetable-tanned leather, leaving a crisp groove that guides your swivel knife and stamps. The Story Behind These Tapoffs

I was first inspired to try a 3D printed tapoff when I received an order for 100 items with the same tooling pattern. Up to then I had made traditional leather tapoffs, but I didn't like the fact that they raised a ridge on the leather that is tricky to make a swivel knife cut on — and my leather tapoffs lacked the fine detail of my patterns.

I asked a friend to help me 3D print a tapoff for that project and ultimately saved about 24 hours of labor on the 100-unit run. After that first experience, I was hooked. These tapoffs leave a groove that is easy to cut with a swivel knife and provide a clear, detailed pattern to start tooling from. I realized they were an inexpensive tool for both beginners and experienced leather crafters — and decided to make custom patterns available to others.

Leather Requirements

Tapoffs work exclusively on vegetable-tanned leather that has been properly cased (dampened). Do not use on chrome-tanned, oil-tanned, or pre-finished leathers — the impression will not hold.

• Casing tip: dampen the flesh side and allow moisture to migrate through until the surface returns to its original color
• Ideal thickness: 3–5 oz for most patterns; heavier leather may require additional mallet pressure

How the Customization Process Works

1. Place your order and use the notes field at checkout to describe your design — or send your artwork/pattern file via the contact page after purchase.
2. We review your design and follow up within 1–2 business days to confirm details, dimensions, and any adjustments needed.
3. We build and test your tapoff in-house, verifying the impression quality on scrap veg-tan before shipping.
4. We ship your finished tapoff along with basic usage instructions.

Design & Size Inputs

• Submit a sketch, vector file (SVG/AI/PDF), or photo of your pattern — hand-drawn sketches are welcome
• Specify the finished dimensions you need (e.g., 4" × 6" panel, 1" repeating border, round medallion)
• Note any required elements: initials, logo, floral motif, geometric repeat, custom border, etc.
• If you have an existing leather piece to match, mention the dimensions so we can size accordingly
